Prepare your self for myClass

Dear students,

Very nice to meet with you all, before we start the class "Database System".
I would like to give you some hints on how you can follow my Class.

Mostly i have been using these both books:
1. Elmasri, Ramez; Navathe, Shamkant B.; Fundamentals of Database Systems, Addison Wesley; 3rd edition (but now, it is already 5th edition, March 17, 2006)
2. Kroenke, David M., Database Processing ,Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall (2004).

For book "Fundamental of Database System" is my favourite book, i have been using this book since i was graduated 1994 at University of Surabaya.

We can see biography of Elmasri as below url:
http://ranger.uta.edu/~elmasri/

Course description:
This course covers the fundamental concepts, principles and techniques for analysis, design of database, and use of database management system such as SQL Server 2005.
This course work includes both homework exercises, and lab-practising. The topics include data models, including entity relationship model (using Chan notation), SQL & Query by Example, database integrity constraints, normalisation, physical database design, datawarehouse, and OLAP technology overview.

Policies and Quizes:
- The course grade will be based on the homework assignments, student participation & disciplines, quizes, one mid-term (UTS) and a final (UAS).
- mid term and final test type are open-paper (A4) with self hand-writen.
- cheating will not be tolerated.
- Grades will be computed approximately as follows: student participation 5%, homeworks and quiz: 15%, mid-term 35% and the final 45%

Course outline:
1. Introduction to database & DBMS
2. The relational data model: concepts and notation
3. The relational data model: how to model
4. Database analysis & design: relationship & normalisation, DDL, integrity constraints
5. SQL & Query by Example: DDL, DML (insert-update-delete), views
6. Physical database design: mapping and create database, table, relationship, etc.
7. Database security
8. Database connection to application: ODBC, OLEDB, ADO
9. Sharing Data: datawarehouse, OLAP
10. Object oriented database

For your e-books, you can download here:

It is very nice, because you can have softcopy documents.

Hopefully, all of you can get more benefit with database, you can create a mini world in your future.

Regards,
